Obtaining the right measurement is the most important part of getting new window screens. Unfortunately, even being a fraction of an inch off can mean the difference between a perfect fit and a frustrating gap. This process involves measuring the width and height of the existing screen or screenless window by using a steel tape measure and recording dimensions to the nearest 1/16″ inch. But of course, there’s more to it than just finding numbers.
If you don’t want to measure yourself, our expert team takes the guesswork out. Just bring in your screen and we’ll take precise measurements for a perfect fit.
How Do You Measure a Window for Replacement Screens?
You measure a window for replacement screens by carefully measuring the width and height of the opening, accounting for any hardware or unique features of your window frame – but more specifically:
- Find the lip, which is U-shaped and on the window frame where the screen sits.
- Measure the width of the window with your tape measure. Make sure to place your tape measure behind the lip.
- Subtract ⅛” from the measurement.
- Find the height in the same way by measuring behind the lip and subtracting ⅛”.
Do You Measure Replacement Windows From the Inside or Outside?
You should measure from the outside because this gives the most accurate dimensions for a screen that needs to fit snugly within the exterior window frame.
But for more challenging situations, like for upper-story windows or in inclement weather, measure from the inside. Using ladders or long-handled tools can be dangerous and still result in inaccurate measurements.
Measuring Using An Existing Screen vs Measuring Without a Screen
If You Have an Existing Screen to Measure
If you already have a screen, you measure a window for replacement by removing the old screen and measuring its dimensions. However, you might find that old screens may have warped or shrunk over time, leading to inaccurate measurements if you’re not careful. Make sure to measure both the screen and the window opening.
If You Do Not Have an Existing Screen to Measure
In this case, you measure by carefully measuring the window opening itself, accounting for any tracks or hardware that the screen needs to fit around.
But some windows, especially in older homes common in our region, aren’t always perfectly square or rectangular. This can lead to screens that don’t quite fit right, leaving gaps for insects to sneak through.
We understand the quirks of Vancouver spaces and can account for all the variables that affect a perfect screen fit.
